Replacing Korg M3R battery

The Korg M3R uses a battery to store the custom program banks. I'm not sure about all m3r models, but mine had a replaceble battery, a CR2032 cell, not soldered to the main board.

To replace the battery follow the next steps:

1) Unscrew the 19" brackets, then the side and backside screws of the top cover. Flip off the cover.

2) Locate the battery at the front left

3) Use a small screwdriver to push back the CR2032 cell and flip it out of the holder.

4) Insert the new battery, place the cover back and finished!

All performances will be set to "Init Combi", so what remains is to load the factory or backup of your soundbanks back into the M3R.

To restore factory patches, press EDIT and GLOBAL and use the PAGE+ button to scroll to page 5 for LOAD, then use PROG button to navigate to 5D, PRESET DATA, and then press the YES button twice to confirm and load the factory presets.

If you've backed-up your custom made patches as a system exclusice file (*.sysex), you can reload those instead.
There are a couple of software tools that can send this file via your midi interface to the M3R. For instance Electron C6 for Windows.(32bit only)

1. Go to https://www.elektron.se/support/ and select your machine from the drop down list
2. Download the C6 software
3. Install C6 on your computer
4. Make sure your M3R MIDI in is connected to your MIDI out of your interface and your M3R MIDI out is connected to the MIDI in of your interface. (Enabling two way communication)
5. Start C6 on your computer, click the config button to open the config screen, make sure that the machine you want to upload is selected under MIDI In and under MIDI Out (They will be marked blue when selected).
6. Drag and drop the .syx file containing the full soundback to the C6 file list.
7. On the global menu of your M3R, select the receive sysex to enable the upload. Also check that the sysex is enabled (see the M3R manual for details)
8. Click the send button in C6 and the M3R should show a flashing led and start receiving the data.

For more details about configuring the C6 software, see the manual included in the C6 download.

  1. Dank. Mijn m3r werkt weer goed. Voor sysex files google sysexdb.

  2. My M3R uses a CR2032, instead. You might want to check what's in your M3R before you buy the wrong battery, as I did.

    1. on the picture there's a 2032 cell... mine had a 2032 as well, so I think the 3032 was just a typo

    2. The battery should be a CR2032 type as you noticed in the picture. I've corrected the text. Thanks for your feedback!
